New Books ~ Review 1

A month or so ago I told you about some new books I had bought at a sale at my dad's church if you missed it here is the link to the post http://rainbowflute.blogspot.com/2010/09/new-books.html

So i thought having read 2 of them that maybe I should let you know if I enjoyed them and why.

So first I read

'A Vintage Affair' by Isabel Wolff

This book did not disappoint! Centred around the story of Phoebe who was opening a Vintage dress shop and how her search for vintage clothes brought her into contact with an older lady nearing the end of her life with a secret to tell. A secret that mirrors a secret in Phoebes own past. I thoroughly enjoyed reading about vintage clothes being in the fashion industry myself but too enjoyed hearing Therese's story and being transported to France and to the 2nd World War. It is lovely to see the healing that this relationship brings each of these hurting women! It is a book I will keep and read again.

I would recommend this book to my friends.

The next book I read was

'Marshmallows For Breakfast' by Dorothy Koomson.

I just loved this title! The idea of eating Marshmallows for Breakfast! What a treat! I was a bit concerned when the blurb on this book said that Kendra fed her neighbours kids Marshmallows for breakfast but actually it was make believe! Kendra was distracting 6 year old twins from the loud argument their father was having with their mother over the phone! From that moment I was hooked! I love children and anyone with the imagination to grab children's attention from the horrors going on around them has my approval! This is the beginning of a very special relationship between Kendra and Kyle and his twins Summer and Jaxon. All of them are hurting and this is the relationship that brings healing to them all and even reaches beyond them to others around them! A difficult book to read if you have issues with alcoholism and rape and infertility but these issues are dealt with very sympathetically.

The reviews of the book I read on Amazon and from a friend I wasn't sure if I would like this book. The reviews weren't good ones at all. Maybe because they had read other books by this author and this one doesn't compare well or maybe it was the subject matter but I loved it! I was totally involved with the story of these peoples lives and found it very hard to put down! Again I book I will keep and highly recommend! I look forward of reading other books by this author!

Well I hope you like my reviews and maybe will give these books a try yourself.

My next book is The Orchid Thief by Susan Orlean which I started last night. I'll let you know how I get on with it.
